The “Mandango” symbol of Vilcabamba

Mandango, the “Laying God”, is a natural observation point that remembers a cathedral because of its majesty, and that holds a special meaning for the locals, from which you can hear a lot of stories and legends. Dominating the valley, this “Sacred Mountain” as is also known, stand as a very attractive geological formation, produced by a concentrated erosive process.

There are others similar hills south from Vilcabamba, but the power of Mandango attracts the attention of whom may visit the valley. When you observe the hill from certain distance, you can see the figure of a laying man, that’s why the locals call him with affection the Mandango Indian (“el Indio Mandango”).

You can hike or rent a horse to climb the hill, alone or with a bilingual and trained guide. The ascension is about an hour to the top. .

Guaranga Hill

In this area you can find the “Agua de Hierro” (Iron Water) also known as miracle water because of its mineral components, such as iron, magnesium, calcium that may help to prevent and reduce heart and kidneys sicknesses, arthritis, skin illness, between others.

This hill is located on Yamburara road, about 8 kms. before the recreational center (Centro Recreacional). There is a detour from the main road, a dirt road to the left, very nice to walk by and that will take you to this natural fountain.

Distance: 30 minute walk, 5 minutes on vehicle.

Chamba and Uchima rivers

This crystalline rivers carry on there waters the secret of the “eternal youth”, that scientist and researchers attribute to its minerals and their medicinal properties. This may be one of the most important reason for the longevity of Vilcabamba elders.

The riversides are a special place to rest, surrounded by native plants, singing birds and the fly a large local variety of amazing and beautiful butterflies, all of which create a unique natural show.

Chamba River: distance 2 kms. By the Yamburara recreational park.

Uchima River: distance 4 kms from San Pedro de Vilcabamba.

Yambala River

On its fresh and transparent waters you can enjoy a refreshing bath and hydro massage on the natural ponds and small cascades. Here you can observe different types of birds and orchids, as a premontan forest, rich in native species.

Distance: 1 hour walk. 45 min, horse ride, 20 min in vehicle.

Estoraques
Estoraques

Estoraques or Suro Cathedrals

They are stalagmite-shape rocks, pointing to the sky. You can find them 16 kms. on the way to Yangana, 20 minutes on vehicle.

CAXARUMI ECO PATH.

It was the old road between Loja and Vilcabamba. Today is used for hiking, bicycle and horse rides. Surrounded by mountains, plain fields, rivers and valleys it is a great exercise for body as well as a delight for mind and senses. The path has a large variety of flora, fauna and singing birds, special for the tranquility of the visitor.
