Podocarpus National Park
This natural wonder that spreads about the provinces of Loja and Zamora owes its name to the Romerillo or Podocarpus, the most characteristic tree from this rain forest. This unique conifer tree from southern of Ecuador can be found from the 1200 to 4000 m. over sea level of altitude in an area of 146.280 hectares that extends from the Andean Heights to the Amazon catchments. Home of the most bio – diverse display in the world where a serial of big lakes are found too.

Park was created in 1982, when it was first priority to preserve the characteristic flora and fauna of the place presented in diverse endemic species and others in danger of extinction. Once it was declared as protected area, many researching projects took place that allowed the ecological and community development in the region.

Panorámica
The exuberant and varied vegetation of the place gave Loja an international recognition as “Botanic Garden of America” where is possible to find a great variety of orchids, 4.000 species of giant plants and trees, some of 40 m. high including the millennia Romerillo and the Chinchona from which the quinine is obtained. In the beginning of the century, this product was useful to fight malaria as part of what Loja contributed to world health

Regarding the fauna, some land species have been found, such as: jaguars, pumas, tapirs and spectacles bear that is the most representative of this area. But the beauty and diversity are endless as there are more than 560 bird species representing the 40% of Ecuador. Besides, during certain season, some migratory kinds can be observed, such as the wide wings falcon, vencejo, tirano oriental, the Swisson, etc, for what is considered a world ornithological center specially in November 1997 when U.S. ornithologist Robert Ridgley from Philadelphia Natural Science Academy discovered a new specie of Jocotoco bird, considered one of the most relevant discoveries from last years.

Among the unique and bio diverse scenery found in the Podocarpus, the most marvelous views come to sight, like spring water fountains and torrential rivers with amazing cascades, mountain cliffs and deep canyons and more than 100 lakes in rocky depressions such as Margarita, Rabadilla de Vaca, Solomaco, Laguna Negra and Compadre being a great tourist attraction, specially for those who love sport fishing. These lakes are from a glacial conformation and give the surroundings an impressive view.

Cascada en el Podocarpus

Due to its geological formation, the Podocarpus gives birth to rivers Catamayo, Chinchipe, Zamora and Nangaritza being these form underground running waters that filter themselves through the wood soil and bases, something that makes them different from other rivers.

Climate in Podocarpus varies depending on the area. On the oriental side, it rains from March to July while October, November and December are the dry months. On the occidental side, rains go from February to April and temperature varies depending on the altitude, 12 degrees for high and 18 for lower places.

A shelter has been built in the park for the tourist comfort. It has a video room, a center for environmental workshops and hostelling at the shelter or the cabins for $3 per person per night. There’s also a dinning room and a kitchen so that tourist can cook for themselves. Note: although the place offers some beds and mats, it is suggested to take your own sleeping bags.
