Carnival.
It takes place during February and March, corresponding to the 4 preceding days of the “Wednesday of Ashes”. Each town in Ecuador has different ways to celebrate, with parades, chants, allegoric chariots, music and a water games.
Because of its “friendly” weather, Vilcabamba is considered one of the most important principal destinations of the southern side of the country during this season.
The small valley dresses up in multiple colors and a joyful ambience, where music is the perfect complement. Since the start of this popular festivity through the fourth day, there is no rest for the visitors, who are offered with different alternatives.
The election of the Carnival Queen and diverse fashion shows, with music concerts and dance parties are the best choice at night. During the day, you can enjoy the handcraft fairs and orchids expositions. Horse and galloping contests are held as well as sports competitions and events. For the ones who want to party the local way, the central park is the meeting point for a general water battle, one of the principal traditions of carnival.
Religious Parties
Religious celebrations in Vilcabamba have great importance and are held in a particular way, neighbors organize processions and gather to pray at the novena, it’s also combined with other activities.
The most important is in September, honoring their town saint: El Señor de la Buena Esperanza. During these days, there is a high commercial activity in town, such as bazaars and artisans fairs and also cultural shows like traditional music bands, dance groups, all mixed up with colorful street decorations where a castle with a firework show takes place in addition to the “Crazy Cow” game and a lot of firecrackers.
Other highlighted activities on this date are the galloping competitions that call the attention of locals and visitors. Bicycle races and other sports activities are also held.
Parish Parties
On May 29, Vilcabamba celebrates its parish parties in which people focus on preserving the local traditions. During the day, there is a typical galloping competition, and sports tournaments and night you can enjoy firecrackers shows and music and dancing groups as well. |
